After our stay at the Amazon Shelter, we headed even deeper into the rainforest to spend some time with Junglekeepers at Alta Sanctuary. Our journey began by car, then continued by boat upriver into the Amazon. The whole trip took us about three hours to reach our final destination, getting really remote in the jungle.
Along the way, there was a very clear border between the areas protected by Junglekeepers and the areas affected by deforestation. The protected rainforest was dense, lush and thriving. Outside those boundaries, deforestation was clearly visible. Being there made it clear why their work is so important and needs to be supported. Junglekeepers protect vast stretches of rainforest every single day.
When we arrived, we instantly felt connected with this place and the rainforest. We were welcomed so warmly by the local team who live and work here.It was inspiring to spend time with people who have dedicated their lives to protecting this incredible place.
Every day brought a new adventure. We floated down the Las Piedras River, climbed a giant tree, and even climbed 110 feet into the rainforest canopy to the Alta Sanctuary treehouse. Waking up each morning surrounded by the sounds of the jungle and spending our days immersed in nature is something we will never forget. We felt so blessed to have the opportunity to be this close to some of the incredible animals that call this rainforest home.
One of the most meaningful parts of our stay was meeting the Junglekeepers rangers. They are out in the rainforest every day, protecting it from illegal logging, mining, and other threats. Hearing their stories and seeing their dedication firsthand gave me a whole new appreciation for the people working tirelessly to keep the forest standing.
